Go with the Modern Youth Room Look

I cannot actually remember being in this youth room and I’m not sure how these pics got onto my hard drive. My best guess is that this is from MSide Youth, but don’t quote me on that. There are a few elements to this modern youth room look that are totally worth noting.

Traditional Band Stage. What this stage highlights is that 1. you do not need a lot of height for staging if you are an a limited space, ceiling height wise 2. clean is the way to go. So often we can get these spaces cluttered, clean space is good space.

This room has the modern ‘steel / chrome’ look going for it. What is cool here is that they have modern furniture that fits the room. The lamps, chairs, tables, maybe not the shag area rug.. The wall hangings with the youth ministry t-shirts is always a good idea. Designed seating areas is also a key. If you do not have spaces that are designed for a purpose then expect your young people to move things around to create whatever is natural.

You can also see that they’ve removed their drop ceiling tiles and painted the ceiling framework black, as well they probably did some sound spray/foam within the ceiling. At least that is what it looks like. If you do this just know that you will need to re-arrange your sprinklers to spray up due to fire codes. It is a manageable process, but will certainly cost.

This is rather eye catching as a food service bar that has a fountain soda machine. Those are not hard or terribly expensive, but they do have a lot of bits and pieces. If you sold sodas from this you can actually make some pretty good money as a fundraiser this way.

What is interesting is the fusion of the corrugated metal that you see in many places. It gives a good effect for the cost. That does seem to be a granite counter top they have used to match the metal. Cool idea, maybe a bit more expensive than most can spend, but as with any remodel project, figure out what is the thing you want to spend money on and make it pop.

I’m not sure what the red circles on the wall are, but my first impression was that they were frisbee’s with the ministries logo on them.. Upon further review I don’t believe that to be the case, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea. Something you might see on HGTV.

Cool Backdrop Ideas

I was backstage at NYWC in Atlanta this past fall and noticed something interesting about their stage design which I thought could be implemented in any youth room out there.

They had, what I can best describe as, sheets of the replacement metal screens you put on screen doors. Crinkled them up, hung them, and then shots lights on them. It gave this cool backdrop illumination. Usually you can find these replacement screens in rolls without any problem. Just pay attention and do not buy the plastic screens, won’t work the same. Not sure the cost but it isn’t more than $20/30 for a roll. Probably would need at least three rolls to fill a small stage space.

Cool Youth Group Room Displays

With just a few dollars you can put together a cool artistic display area for your youth group room. You can also make this part of a program idea.

Again, this was another idea that Kevin Alton really liked. I can’t remember whether this was a lifehacker thing or a photojojo craft, but it worked so we are sharing it here.

1. Get some thin wire & a packet of mini binder clips. Total cost is like $5 – 20 dollars depending on how much you want to buy.

2. Pull some of the wire for the length that you want them to hang. Wrap the wire around one of the mini-binder clips and then secure that clip to the ceiling. If you have a drop ceiling this is really really easy. If you do not have a drop ceiling then you might have to become a bit more creative. Hang as many strings as you so desire. In these photos we did some 20 wires that made a small ‘room’ that you could stand in.

3. From there you take the wire end and then do a loop and through of one side of the binder clip. If done right it should slide up the wire as needed, but with a little pressure pulling down will hold some paper, photos, poster board., or even foam core boards. It is isn’t so strong to hold really heavy objects, but why not give it a try.

4. String up four to 10 mini-binder clips on the strings. Space the clips as evenly as possible.

5. Hang whatever you want from there. If they are on the walls you can hang photos. Within these photos we used this for hanging meditations, poems, prayers, laments, and some pictures that youth created.

Some ideas for this might be to do a photo collage wall of a mission trip or retreat. Some affirmation wall where people can hang cards of affirmation for others in the youth group. Or you can use it like we did for youth to put together poems, prayers, etc.

Cool Illuminated Pillars

Cool Lighted Pillars for Youth Room

I dazzled Kevin with this idea for our Sacred Space area that we created for Youth 2011. We put these neat looking, yet, terribly simple, illuminated pillars throughout our room.

Why these pillars? Well, one they are a great eye grabber. People see these tall structures and quickly go wow! Here’s how we went about this.

1. We procured a bunch of raw Coroplast sheets. Coroplast is used for lawn signs and even backdrops for stage/theater set ups. The raw format basically is an untouched sheet that is about 8-10 feet tall depending on how you purchase it. The cost for a sheet is around 15 dollars & can be found at most sign shops. You can get them in multiple colors as well.

2. Then we laid the sheets down and scored them into thirds where one side of the plastic was cut but still connected on the opposite site. This way we could fold the sheet into a triangle.

3. We grabbed some cheap 2 liters of soda and taped them to the base of coroplast. Cost for the soda was about 99 cents each.

4. We then affixed a halogen lamp with clip to the top of the 2 liter bottle. Cost for bulb and light kit around 15 dollars.

5. Lastly we fold the coroplast into a triangle and then tape it (using a clear tape) along the seem.

6. Stand up the pillar and plug it in and you’ve got yourself a cool illuminated pillar for your youth room.

Fun stuff with this material is that it can be written on with a marker or had paper pasted to it. So you can do some fancy artwork that filters the light to give some specific illuminations.

Found this fish tank to be a pretty neat idea. Well, not the fish tank itself, but more the wooden box built on top of the tank and the embedded digital photo frame. Having animals for a youth room is a bit of extra work (not always a bad thing) but also with some of the new computer controlled A/C systems it could be a bad place have an animal in the youth room. If you do not have those issues and feeling a bit adventurous this might appeal to you.
