Appropos of nothing, but since you’re talking about music:
I don’t know if you’re at all familiar with Terry Scott Taylor / Daniel Amos / The Swirling Eddies, but perhaps my favorite recieved Christmas gift this year was the 20th-anniversary re-release of the Daniel Amos album “Darn Floor – Big Bite.” Terrific, terrific CD. The re-release has a bonus disk with live tracks, videos, and an interview with Terry Taylor. He calls DF/BB his favorite DA album, and said that while fans never used to mention it to him they do so more and more as the years go on.
The title comes from a true news story about an ape who was taught sign language. After an earthquake had taken place at the research facility, one of the researchers, curious to see what would happen, asked the ape to tell him (or her) what had just taken place. The ape signed “darn floor big bite.” Terry uses this as a metaphor for human attempts to describe God in our own very inadequate language or imagine him with our own very inadequate consciousness.
