What is Your Best / Worst Youth Sports Story? {GIVEAWAY}

August 24, 2011 By Gavin Richardson

I have been given a copy of “The Sacred Acre” to review for a site like this and Amazon, etc. It is not the usual reads that I dive into but this one is different. If you are not familiar with the Ed Thomas story and legacy it is one of great triumphs and depths. ESPN E60 did a feature on him a few times.

I have been promised two free copies to our friends, so I thought it would be fun to share some of our ‘war’ stories as youth workers going to our teenagers sporting events. Throw in your funniest, worst, most inspiring, biggest headache story and we will decide amongst those who share. Depending on how fast I finish my copy I might throw mine into the mix for a third person (I know that just has you jumping for joy).

When He had hair He was Working on This!!

June 29, 2011 By Gavin Richardson

Leadership LabI’ve known Hank Hilliard since 1995 when I was doing short term missions work and he brought his youth group to our camp. Back then we were both much younger and we both had a full head of hair. Well, I still do have a full head of hair, can’t say the same for Hank. But since then Hank has been working up and developing how to create student leaders in his ministry and he’s pulled this together in a tested out resource (not something he just made up and is throwing out there) called Leadership Lab.

Check out Hank’s own thoughts on this tool.

Pick up your copy of Leadership Lab through the Cokesbury website.

Who Cares about the Saints? #thomasmerton

June 2, 2011 By Gavin Richardson

Spent the evening checking out this series of videos by Loyola Productions titled “Who Cares about the Saints?” I’ve been massively influenced by Thomas Merton so that was an easy grab. What I love about the videos is that they not only give the positives of the persons life, but also shares the struggles or faults within the various lives of the saints of our faith.

Who Cares about the Saints? (Thomas Merton) from Loyola Productions on Vimeo.

Love the conclusion here that a very great man of God can be so flawed in ways of the world yet still devoted to a life with Christ. I think we’d all be better off if we gave ourselves some grace to not have to be perfect in our striding towards holiness.
