I dazzled Kevin with this idea for our Sacred Space area that we created for Youth 2011. We put these neat looking, yet, terribly simple, illuminated pillars throughout our room.

Why these pillars? Well, one they are a great eye grabber. People see these tall structures and quickly go wow! Here’s how we went about this.

1. We procured a bunch of raw Coroplast sheets. Coroplast is used for lawn signs and even backdrops for stage/theater set ups. The raw format basically is an untouched sheet that is about 8-10 feet tall depending on how you purchase it. The cost for a sheet is around 15 dollars & can be found at most sign shops. You can get them in multiple colors as well.

2. Then we laid the sheets down and scored them into thirds where one side of the plastic was cut but still connected on the opposite site. This way we could fold the sheet into a triangle.

3. We grabbed some cheap 2 liters of soda and taped them to the base of coroplast. Cost for the soda was about 99 cents each.

4. We then affixed a halogen lamp with clip to the top of the 2 liter bottle. Cost for bulb and light kit around 15 dollars.

5. Lastly we fold the coroplast into a triangle and then tape it (using a clear tape) along the seem.

6. Stand up the pillar and plug it in and you’ve got yourself a cool illuminated pillar for your youth room.

Fun stuff with this material is that it can be written on with a marker or had paper pasted to it. So you can do some fancy artwork that filters the light to give some specific illuminations.
