a coworker friend mentioned to me that when he was coming up to visit he noticed that someone had written a less than favorable review on our church on google.
"really?"
"yeah, but don’t worry, it looks like that person who gets mad at the slightest things"
so i checked it out. some of the stuff is shallow in the grand scheme of things, but it’s real. it is making me wonder. how does one show grace as a church amongst the anonymous criticism of the social media allows?
i am sure larger and higher profile churches & ministries have dealt with this or ignored these type of things. but as this becomes the norm for smaller or mid-sized communities, is there a difference to responding?

While it’s probably not a huge deal, it’s worth sharing with the people of the church so they remember their responsibility to be welcoming to everybody.

Your response is very well done.
The church community I’m a part of strives to be a “safe” place to the extent that we often struggle with how much welcome to push onto new visitors… On one hand we want people to be able to come in anonymously and check it out without feeling pressure to interact with anyone if they don’t want to. On the other hand, this can sometimes leave new visitors feeling like we don’t care about them. It is an interesting line to step back and forth across.
Anyway.
Good response.

I think that you did very well and really showed grace. I’ve found that in online communities where people say nasty things about Christians, they are trying to bait Christians and are genuinely surprised to find Christians who are not total a——s.

I wonder what leads someone to write a review like this. Wonder why she chose to visit another church in the first place.
But, I think this is a good learning opportunity for your church… I’d print this in the next church newsletter as one outsider’s impression of your church. Sometimes us insiders get too wrapped up in our own little world and forget our calling.
