my buddy thomas is a texas fan is rather upset by the latest fun from the bowl championship series rankings that put his longhorns out of the big 12 championship game and likely out of the national championship. i have my own strong opinions which i got into rant mode. figured i'd share them here. if you can't read between my sarcasm and serious thoughts just ask or take me to task.
i'm with you thomas as a bama grad. texas should be in the game. its
painfully obvious how swaying the polls are to the whims of what
happened last weekend.
if texas was on the primetime tv last
saturday and showed no defense and scored 60 points against another
team who had no defense then they would have held onto their 1st place
standing in the b12 south by keeping ahead in the bcs.
as
history goes, the media loves oklahoma and what have they done in
championship games? generally they tank with only one national
championship win (seven years ago). they are even the great team that lost to a non-bcs
conference.
texas when they got a shot only beat the, at the
time before kick-off, the 'team of the century' as the pundits were
calling usc. let it be known that the big 12 is 6-8 in bcs bowl games, four of those losses come via oklahoma, i anticipate another one coming. texas is 2-0 in their shot at bcs bowl games.
i don't know why they don't consider tradition, it
doesn't leave from weekend to weekend. the team you thought was so great one weekend shouldn't just fall away the next, just as one you didn't think was as good as another doesn't just leap ahead of the other this late in the season.
plus an offense cannot win a
championship. the colts never did till they sured up their offense. the
'92 miami hurricanes got throttled when they met the alabama defense.
no one gave the ravens much of a chance with dilfer, but how'd that
turn out? i have no confidence in a team that cannot stop another team from scoring.
okay, that feels like sufficient rant. texas got hosed because our pundits are more into fads than they are into sustainability and sound teams. they love the quarterback, or the single person talent on a team, over the offensive and defensive lines.
note:
i am glad they still hold fast to the undefeated being number one, bama
gets no respect for being undefeated except that as tradition goes an
undefeated team gets default number 1 status. it pissed me off when
ohio state got there with slow teams in the past, but it's proving
helpful for my team this year.
all that said. bama beats florida in a close one that almost gives me a heart attack. then rolls on to beat oklahoma by hitting sam bradford into the chin and pushing their o-line back and stumping their wide-outs with an awesome secondary. or florida wins and beats oklahoma and scores more points than bo jackson in techmo

As a Missouri graduate, I am not sure what to think. Of course, the loss to Kansas pretty well made anything meaningless.
As an Iowa graduate, I keep wondering where they are going to send the Hawkeyes because all of the projections have them going to several different bowls. My only hope at this point is that Missouri and Iowa play in the same bowl game. That way, I can enjoy the game and not worry about who wins.
But I am also a graduate of a Division II school and I have taught at Division III schools. Why is it that we can have a playoff at those levels but we cannot have a playoff at the higher level.
I know the answer but the answer only tells us that that the game we played as kids is now a business and business and fun should never mix.

i wonder why we couldn’t find some play like the div 2 or 3 universities. they don’t seem to be swayed by the ‘out of school longer’ argument, which leads to the real reason. money.. we all know it just name and it. i would think a few extra games would make more money. fan bases would travel, the individual person might just not go to every game or spend their mortgaged house at one place. not sure that’s a bad thing either.
i always wondered why iowa wasn’t part of the big 12. i’m rooting for mizzou-rah. i think that gives the best big12 candidate for a national champ game.

I had to post my thoughts on this on my facebook page because the content really wasn’t appropriate for my Sunday School Blog. Basically, Texas beat OU on a neutral field (did you already know that?) and lost to Texas Tech in Lubbock on the last play against a hostile crowd who was had enjoyed College Game Day being there for the first time. They were hosting the #1 team in the country, a team they hate almost as much as OU does. They were trying to get everyone to wear black so they could “black out” the stadium for this historic event. They even had Bobby Knight publicly say how much he hoped Tech would kick Texas’ a$$. They were undefeated, but still feeling disrespected by those not giving them a chance. That game was a trap, no way Texas could match the emotional intensity. They got behind early, and fought back to take the lead late, only to lose on a desparation last second play.
No, it really doesn’t matter as much that OU dominated Tech in Norman. That night belonged to an emotional crowd and Red Raider football team. It was the emotion that carried Tech past Texas.
Texas did lose that game, so they can’t blame anyone but themselves, but it sucks to see two teams that you beat play for a conference championship. If this were any other conference that has a championship game, Texas wins the tie breaker.

All this justifies a playoff. 1st round the weekend before Christmas (after finals), 2nd round New Year’s day (rotate amongst the traditional premier bowls, like BCS does now), Finals 2nd weekend after New Years (school isn’t in yet of if it is, it’s just the 1st week)

how helpful is that matt? &:~) we all know that these coaches play the game when they are the underdog and sit out when it suits them.
whomever comes out of the big 12 for the national championship, i expect it to be oklahoma, they need to sure up their defense. you may have put a pounding on osu, but your defense did you no favors in separating your team from a byu game or a college basketball score. to me, that does not signify a national champion character. champions are not just the best offense but the best all over team. not to mention you have some track record redeeming to do. you could be the next ohio state, you wouldn’t want that.
greg, keep saying that. they are wasted energy/words, but sure, it’d be nice to have.

Well, if OU does win and go to the National Championship, I will expect them to do as well as they have in the past. Under the big lights, they shrivel up. Unlike my Longhorns against the great and mighty USC a couple of years ago.
